welcome home!

(photos soon, as soon as I find the download cord…)

We’re here. Exhausted and sore, but finally in home, sweet home.

We came over late on Tuesday night with the kitties. We walked outside in our backyard and looked at stars (don’t see much of those in Oakland). We wandered around the empty rooms with gleeful grins on our faces. We stayed up much too late talking about how we felt. Both of us agreed that it felt like we just arrived back home after a long time away. This house immediately feels like home.

Yesterday was my birthday. You know you’re happy when a day filled with countless trips up and down stairs, heavy lifting, dirt, a traffic jam, aching legs and feet and frightened kitties feels like the best day of your life. Some thoughts from the day:

  • I wish we were made of money so I could have had the movers pack everything, too. Dang, they were fast. And awesome. If you live in the Bay Area, spend the little bit extra and go with Delancy Street. A great foundation and they do a freaking amazing job. Nice guys, too. Not an ounce of attitude, polite and friendly and helpful. Loved them.
  • Two words: dust bunnies. Yep, I will be getting some attachments for the vacuum hose. Dang.
  • Kitties are settling in. They spent yesterday locked in the third bedroom, hiding under blankets. Last night they finally ventured out. Katie is happy as a clam in the new bedroom. Cleo is wandering around yowling. They are both enjoying the view of birds from the windows.
  • Bathroom observations: Love the skylight in the hall bathroom. Also, wow, that is a powerful shower. And: there is a heating vent in both bathrooms. And a heat lamp.  No more freezing cold mornings. Happiness.
  • The garage has, as if this is possible, almost TOO much storage. Lots of random cabinets and cupboards. I think this will take some sifting through and weeding out. But the garage itself is fantastic. And hello – LAUNDRY. I’ve already done three loads. So nice to wash the bedding without having to go to the laundromat (our shared laundry at the apartment was too small for our big blankets)
  • Apparently our yard is bird heaven. Lots of little flutters everywhere. I think I’ll be heading over to Wild Birds sometime this week to stock up on some birdseed.
  • I almost danced a jig when I used the garbage disposal for the first time.
  • People came over to help us unpack, which was amazing. Seeing Terri enjoying spending time with high school friends: another fantastic birthday gift.
  • The rooms in the house are not as small as we feared. The house feels spacious, even. We are home.

Now I have a purring kitty next to me and I’m listening to birds chirping outside and seeing the sun filter in through the window. I think I’m going to go put on a bathrobe and water the yard. The backyard is so private and peaceful.

Photos soon! Who knew 36 would rank up there in the Best Birthdays Ever list?

I am pretty dang happy, I have to say. Sometimes, that thing that you really, really want really DOES make a difference. I feel like a part of me that has been tense for the past, oh, 10 YEARS, has finally relaxed.

Even though there were some yucky bumps in the road, this is so obviously the right place for us. Everything went so well and the house is perfect for us. Also, you are right — we were looking for a long time and then all of a sudden, BOOM, we found it and then the roller coaster took off! it feels GREAT for all that to be over.
