Today’s Harvest

August 6, 2011

Three large cucumbers (Japanese?), three lemon cucumbers, three small tomatoes, an eggplant, and some green beans and the very last of the peas.

We’ve been getting a couple cucumbers every few days, and we have TONS of green tomatoes. My tomato plants recently fell over — they just got too large. Next year I need to make better tomato cages. I am afraid to mess with the plants very much; I don’t want to break the stalks. I sort of propped them up a bit and we’ll just leave them be through the rest of the season.

We have a few ears of corn as well but I don’t know when to harvest those. And I need to dig up the rest of the potatoes, probably tomorrow.

Thomas likes to lick the green beans. Silly cat.

Well done. I had the same problem with tomatoes last year. They just grew to big too fast and there wasn’t enough support for them. Oh well – there is always next season!

Corn – gently pull back the husk to see what color the ears are, and test for tenderness. If not ripe, put the husk back for a few more days.

Your eggplant looks to be or a rather, er, freeform shape. We’ve got corn but no eggplant yet. And how weird that Thomas likes to lick the green beans. I wonder if he likes the texture?

He also likes to lick plastic of any kind. He’s a weird cat. Yes, the eggplant is freeform. And streaked with green. Bizarre.
