List Week: 10 Cheesy Songs I Love

I am proud to report that aside from a little bit of design work which I *had* to do (but which I did in my pajamas while sitting in bed), I did NOTHING this weekend. I got dressed for a total of about two hours, once to go out with Terri to run a quick errand, and once to go to the nearby grocery store to get veggies for dinner. We didn’t even eat dinner on Saturday, and yesterday it was raw or blanched veggies with homemade Thousand Island dip. Other than that, it’s been a Mad Men marathon, punctuated by some reading of a Really Bad Book (review to come soon!) and a lot of sleeping. I’m starting to feel human again.

To continue to theme of non-productive silliness, here’s my first list of the week. I’m following List Week, along with Miss Tammie (she of the Irregular variety). Be warned: I’m going to be completely honest here. As a former college alt-rock radio DJ and minor music snob, this is hard for me to admit. However, I am proud of my weirdness, so here goes, in no particular order (accompanied by video links, which are the cheesy cherry on the sundae):

1. Breakthru, by Queen. This is an AWESOME video. Freddie Mercury singing on a moving train? Bizarre model dressed like Darryl Hannah in “Bladerunner”? Yes!

2. The Gambler, Kenny Rogers. Bonus: this video has Muppets. Double Cheese! Triple awesomeness: Muppets gambling, drinking, and smoking.

3. I’m Too Sexy, Right Said Fred. OK, who doesn’t love this song? My friend D’Arcy and I have a whole dance routine to this song.

4. Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight), by Abba (or pretty much anything else by Abba) Abba is in the same category as Queen. It doesn’t matter, day or night, they are always, always awesome.

5. Ventura Highway, by America. I had this album when I was little, and I thought this was the prettiest song evar. Having now been down the Ventura Highway a few times, I have to say it’s the perfect song to play in the evening, the light sparkling off the ocean. Ultimate California Cheese.

6. No Sleep Till Brooklyn, by The Beastie Boys. This video is hilarious. Who knew these guys were actually talented?

7. Photograph, Def Leppard. There is a whole range of horrible 80s hair-band songs that I love, but for some reason this is one of my favorites. This video was done when their drummer still had two arms.

8. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John. I love many Elton John songs but this one is so pretty. More Muppets in this video (I have a weakness for Muppets).

9. Twilight Zone, by Golden Earring. OK, I just flat-out love this song. Especially if I have it playing on headphones when I’m walking in the dark somewhere. Very noir. Or, er, not. (side note: what is UP with this video?)

10. Annie’s Song, John Denver. Ultimate cheese. There is a whole funny story about this song involving bizarre translations in Finnish (from when I was an exchange student), but it’s too long to go into here, and maybe you had to be there. However, I do have a soft spot for John Denver.
